There are lots of guide books for the Somme Battlefield but these seem to either cover the entire area with comparatively little human detail or to cover the ground and the tactical movement of troops over it at huge length. This book covers the 20 most important sites, giving an insight into the individuals who served and in many cases sadly died there as well as illustrating a facet of the battle. Subjects covered include boy soldiers, VC winners, shot at dawn, the Pals battalions, mining , gas and cavalry.
General the Lord Dannatt who has reviewed the book says "Ruaraidh Adams-Cairns' explanations of what happened and why are masterful. This book is a must for the military expert and general reader alike."
